Problems with ASUS Black Diamond Dual-Band Wireless-N 600 Router (RT-N56U)

ASUS Black Diamond Dual-Band Wireless-N 600 Router is a decent choice for your home networking needs based on its features and price. You can attach a printer or external hard-disk directly to the router via USB ports, so that they can be accessed by any computer or mobile device in your home network. You can also access the external hard-disk securely from anywhere on the internet. Being dual-band, the router is able to deliver 1Gigabits/sec of throughput.

Is that all you look for in a home wireless router? As always, Cautionista checks out the lesser known aspects of this router, so that you can make an informed decision before purchase. Customers who purchased the Asus RT-N56U router found the following issues -

  • Asus customer support is not responsive. They pretty much ask you to update the firmware of the router, and are not keen or troubleshooting the issue with you.
  • The Asus Wireless-N router had DHCP problems, but Linksys E4200 router worked fine with the same devices.
  • Unable to access the internet. Calls to tech support didn't help. Replacement Cisco router worked fine right away.
  • Loses connection randomly on wired and wireless, when using as an Access Point.
  • Doesn't connect to uBee Cable modem provided by Comcast.

  • Randomly hangs up, needing to power cycle, especially after lots of disk access to the external hard drive connected to the router via USB.
  • The power supply of the router cracked open when disconnecting it from the wall.
  • Dead on Arrival (DOA) - the router didn't power on out of the box.
  • Router lost connection with the modem after an hour or so, and wouldn't connect at all afterwards.
  • Router kept rebooting after moving from one place to another. Customer service was no joy.
  • Loses connection to the internet once a day, need to unplug and plug back in to regain connection.
  • The Asus router has DNS relay enabled, which causes problems for VoIP phones.
  • Range and Speed are almost half of an old Linksys router. Signal very weak after around 50 ft.
  • Router completely stopped working after around 6 months. All the lights on the router went out.
  • Tech Support number is not Toll-free.

What we understood

Asus customer support seems to be what most of the unsatisfied customers found to be lacking. The router doesn't seem to be reliable enough for home networking. You may get lucky if you buy the Asus Wireless N router and it may work for you without problems, but based on what a lot of other customers found, looks like you may become disappointed with the purchase. Why take the chance when there are lots of other options available?
