Problems with Genie Series III 3 Button Remote Control for Garage Doors

Genie Series III 3 Button Remote Control G3T-BX is a compact remote control that works with most garage door openers. Here we take a closer look at some of the things to keep in mind while purchasing and using this remote control.

  • By default, the first two buttons are set to Intellicode 2 mode. If your garage door opener is Intellicode 1, then you need to change these buttons to that mode by the following method - press and hold the button (around 10 seconds) until you see both red and green LED light up on the remote. These are tiny LEDs, so you need to really look for them. Release the button. Press the same button once and release. This will change the mode of the button to Intellicode 1. Press and release the same button one more time to confirm the change. Now you can use that button to program an Intellicode 1 garage door opener. The third button is preset for Intellicode 1 mode.
  • How do you know if a button on the remote is Intellicode 1 or 2 ? Just press the button - if the LED on the remote glows green, then it's Intellicode 2. If it glows red, it's Intellicode 1. To switch back to Intellicode 2, follow the same procedure mentioned above. The third button can be switched to Intellicode 2 from the factory preset Intellicode 1 using the same steps described above.

  • The procedure to program the remote for an Intellicode 1 garage door opener is not mentioned in the manual. It's quite simple though. Press and release the learn button on your garage door opener. It's usually located inside the light cover of the opener, if equipped. The LED below the learn button will begin flashing. Now press and release the button on the remote that you would like to program. The LED will now stop flashing and glow steadily. Press and release the same button on the remote once more. The LED should now go out. Press and release the same button on the remote once more. The garage opener should now respond to the remote.
  • Genie garage door openers, like model CM7600IC/A, have only enough receiver memory to hold 7 remotes. It's possible that some of those memory locations are already occupied by remotes that were damaged, lost or just not being used by you at the moment. If all 7 memory locations have been used up in the garage door opener, you would see that when you program the opener with your Genie Series III remote, the remote that was last added, including HomeLink or Car2U transmitters, would be replaced by the Series III remote. This means that after you program the Genie remote, your car's HomeLink remote would stop working, if that was the one added last. If this happens, you need to first clear the receiver memory of the Garage door opener by pressing and holding the learn button on the opener until the LED on the opener goes out. This would delete all remotes from the Garage opener's receiver memory, including the unused or lost remotes. After this, you need to reprogram all of your current remotes including the Series III, to the Garage opener by following the procedure to program remotes for Intellicode 1 mentioned above.
  • The remote is much smaller than it appears in the images available online. It's only around 2" x 1" and around 0.25" thick. So, if you are looking for a bigger remote, this one is not for you. You need to get one like Chamberlain KLIK1U Clicker which measures around 2" x 4" and around 0.75" thick. The Chamberlain remote is also a Universal Garage Door remote like the Genie Series III.
