Problems with LG BD670 3D Wireless Network Blu-ray Disc Player

The LG BD670 3D Blu-ray player can also play streaming video from services like Netflix, HuluPlus or Youtube. It's a reasonably priced Blu-ray player with built-in Wi-Fi capability. Cautionista takes a closer look at the player to look for signs of any major disadvantages that might take the joy out of watching movies using this player.

Some of the issues that several customers found with this player are -

  • Player randomly freezes when streaming Netflix.
  • Player randomly loses wireless settings, need to unplug and plug it back in and then reconfigure the wireless settings.
  • Optical reader of the player went bad after the 90-day labor warranty period elapsed.
  • Doesn't play DVDs reliably.

  • Randomly refuses to play, need to unplug the unit and plug back in.
  • Slow to load Blu-ray discs.
  • Player makes loud grinding noise and refuses to play DVD or Blu-ray discs after a few months of operation.
  • Some discs play for a few minutes and then the player freezes. Need to unplug and plug back in to recover.
  • Slow to respond to remote or front panel buttons.
  • Netflix interface of the player is very clunky.
  • Pausing and resuming a Netflix movie results in no sound for some time.
  • Player randomly shuts off by itself, need to unplug and plug back in to restore normal operation.
  • The player goes into infinite loop after each software update. Loses Netflix activation after each update.
  • If you have a USB flash drive attached and then try to connect to Netflix, it freezes up.

Our recommendation

Most of the customers say that this product works for a few months and then starts having basic problems like unable to play discs or connect to Netflix. Since the warranty is only 90 days for labor, the customers end up spending around $70 for getting the unit repaired. Even then it's a hit or miss. Looks like the company didn't get it right with this player - it doesn't live up to the LG brand name. Our honest recommendation is to not buy the LG BD670 player.

Alternatives

Sony BDP-S590 3D Blu-ray player. This player does live up to the Sony brand name and has pretty much similar features as the LG BD670.

If you mainly stream movies or shows from Netflix, HuluPlus, Amazon Videos,... we recommend one of the Roku players that are top of the class, yet reasonably priced.
